We Have Nothing to Fear but...

A few things that don’t scare me:

1.Ghosts
2.Vampires
3.Zombies
4.Werewolves
5.Witches

I think you get the idea.

A few things that do scare me:

1.Abduction
2.Confusion
3.Pain
4.Psychosis
5.Satan

So tell me. What frightens you most? If you were going to write a horror novel, what would it be about?

Should part of our journeys as writers be to stare down our darkest demons?

Alzheimer's/dementia

Depression (do you really think JK Rowling made up the dementors?)

Yeah, anything to do with losing your mind is pretty frightening, Mark.

I dunno, Jude. I've met some pretty scary witches--even if they don't have a caldron and pointy hat.

The biggie for me, enclosed spaces.

And hey, what's wrong with mayo on chips?

I had a really cool dream a few days ago that I woke up and thought, "This would make a great horror novel."

As for what scares me, it's zombies hands-down. I'd much rather be confused than have to deal with the undead.

Zombies really freak my son out.

I want to hear about that dream.

I'm still thinking of writing it. The dream, that is. I like horror, and I think I'm good at it because I'm naturally terrified of many things. It's not very hard for me to communicate fear on the page when I'm most likely shaking myself.

Anyway, the dream involved the severed head of my dog and YouTube.

Was it anything like this?

That's hilarious ... but, no, the two elements didn't really relate in my dream. It wasn't my severed dog's head IN a YouTube video. For now, though, this is just filed away with other ideas I may or may not ever work on.

Hi Teresa:

Would you care to elaborate on that?

But... but... but... you deleted a post. I wanted to weigh in on the plot and prose thing.

I wanted to expand it some, haven't had time yet. We were discussing it over on LurkerMonkey's blog if you want to check it out.

I loved your discussion there! This is funny, but I'd had so many thoughts about that post that I didn't make a comment because it was going to be long, and I was going to make a blog post instead. Hypocrite that I am, I ended up not doing either.

Must! :-)

Hi Jude

I think we fear the unknown - how many monsters in movies lose a LOT of their scare factor as soon as they come out of the shadows?

I'll second the 'what's wrong with mayo on french fries?' query. Hey, I'm a Brit - we put vinegar on ours ...

And anyone scared of zombies really ought to watch 'Shaun of the Dead' with Simon Pegg, which has to be one of the funniest zombie movies ever.

Hi Zoe:

Yes, the unknown. Definitely.

Sorry, but ketchup is the default condiment for fries in The States.
